Everything You Need to Know
Last updated: May 21, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Chief platform ("Platform"), provided by Signal from Noise, Inc. ("Chief," "we," or "us"). By accessing or using the Platform, you agree to be bound by these Terms.
Account Registration and User Responsibilities
To save content to the Platform, you must create an account. You agree to provide accurate and complete information during the registration process and to keep your account information updated.
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account. You agree to notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account or any other breach of security.
You are responsible for all content and activities that occur under your account. You agree not to use the Platform for any illegal, harmful, or unauthorized purposes.
Live Call Recording and Consent Obligations
Chief includes features that capture and transcribe live audio from calls and meetings (referred to as "Live Call Recording" or "Recording"). By using Chief's Recording features, you acknowledge and agree to the following:
- YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for obtaining consent from all parties to any recorded call or meeting BEFORE recording begins, regardless of the jurisdiction where participants are located.
- Chief does not monitor, verify, or enforce consent compliance. Chief is a tool you control — the legal responsibility for obtaining consent rests entirely with you.
- Certain jurisdictions, including California, require consent from all parties to a call before recording can lawfully occur. Other jurisdictions require consent from only one party. You are responsible for understanding and complying with the laws of all jurisdictions applicable to participants on your calls.
- If you record a call without the required consent of all parties, you may face civil and/or criminal liability under applicable wiretapping and recording statutes. Chief shall not be liable for your use of the Recording feature in violation of applicable law.
- Best Practice: Before using Chief's Recording features, disclose to all participants that you are recording the conversation (e.g., "I'm using an AI assistant to take notes during this call" or "This call will be recorded and transcribed"). This disclosure transforms a potentially confidential communication into a consensual one.
- You may delete recordings and transcripts at any time from your Chief account. Deletion instructions are available in Chief's help documentation.
Intellectual Property Rights
The Platform and its content, including but not limited to text, graphics, images, logos, and software, are protected by intellectual property laws. You agree not to modify, reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works based on the Platform or its content without our prior written consent.
You retain ownership of the content you upload to the Platform. By uploading content, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, and distribute the content for the purpose of providing the Platform's services and improving the Platform.
Our liability surrounding the data you upload to the Platform is limited to what is outlined in our Data Protection Agreement ("DPA").
User Content and Conduct
You are solely responsible for the content you upload, post, or transmit through the Platform. You agree not to upload, post, or transmit any content that is unlawful, harmful, defamatory, infringing, or otherwise objectionable.
We reserve the right to remove or disable access to any content that violates these Terms or is otherwise objectionable, without prior notice.
You agree not to interfere with or disrupt the operation of the Platform or the servers or networks connected to the Platform. You also agree not to bypass any measures we may use to prevent or restrict access to the Platform.
You further agree not to use the Platform to:
- Record, capture, or transcribe any call, meeting, or conversation without obtaining the prior consent of all parties to that communication, as required by applicable law.
- Use the Platform in any manner that violates any federal, state, or local recording consent laws, including but not limited to wiretapping statutes and two-party/all-party consent statutes.
Privacy and Data Protection
Our collection and use of personal information is governed by our Privacy Policy. By using the Platform, you consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information as described in the Privacy Policy. See our Privacy Policy.
Termination
We may rate limit, terminate or suspend your access to the Platform, without prior notice or liability, for any reason, including if you breach these Terms or we determine you are abusing the Platform.
Upon termination, your right to access and use the Platform will immediately cease, and any content associated with your account may be deleted.
Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Signal from Noise, Inc. and its affiliates, officers, directors, employees, and agents shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with the use or inability to use the Platform.
Chief shall not be liable for any claims, damages, or losses arising from your use of Chief's Recording features in violation of recording consent laws, including but not limited to claims under California Penal Code § 632, the federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act, or analogous state statutes.
Governing Law and Dispute Resolution
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction where Chief is located.
Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Platform shall be resolved through binding arbitration in accordance with the rules of the relevant arbitration association.
Modifications to the Terms
We reserve the right to modify or update these Terms at any time, without prior notice. The updated Terms will be effective upon posting on the Platform. Your continued use of the Platform after the posting of the updated Terms constitutes your acceptance of the changes.
